Media Review of "Just Breathe"
by Sylvia Mitchell, writer for the Miami Times
Just Breathe is a stage play written by Andre Sartin and co-writer Claudette Cannon. Presented by Act 2 Productions, the curtains rose on October 23rd, 2009 at Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center to a packed audience who showed their appreciation for the casts authenticity and thespian talents. In particular, Pastor Connail Johnsons rendition of Sam Cookes A change is gonna come brought thunderous applause from the audience. Just Breathe reminds us to relax, be still, and do not be anxious for anything. This story prompts us to be aware of God who is in control of our lives and even when were taunted and mocked for being fanatical about Jesus; we have to hold on and press our way through. The play is a Christian comedy set in a modern-day contemporary black familys experience with authentic traces of everyday life trials and tribulations.
The plot involves Ruth (Natasha Cooks) a strong black mother who has her faith rooted in God, along with her teenage daughter Dana (Ashley Bellinger) who has come to the conclusion that God cannot be trusted because her uncle attempted to sexually assault her, her father abandoned their family, and her brother may have been fatally wounded in Iraq. Dana accuses her mother of spending too much time down at the church and she believes this is why her father left the family. While all of this is going on, a pedestrian, Joy (Kandace Johnson), is struck by a car right in front of Ruths door and is brought into her living room to wait for the arrival of paramedics (Clifton Taylor & Rueben Troutman). Ruth does the only thing she knows how to do -- cry out to the Lord to save this precious girls life. Ruths character is continually being defined for the audience as the one who encourages herself, her family, friends and even strangers. Ruth is always to the rescue! With grace and patience, Ruth serves as a role model for her three closest friends who have a form of godliness but are still immature in the ways of God. Her friends are: Vickie Antonio (Friend #1), Sherrie Walton (Friend #2), and Joy Richardson (Friend #3).
Whether you are looking for a spiritual experience or a fun night out with the whole family, Just Breathe is funny and the music is great. It is a quality play that the entire family will enjoy. The writers, producers, and actors convey the message that Gods Spirit is the breath of life. In the midst of insurmountable odds, if we only could remember to Just Breathe because as we breathe in the Spirit of God we filter out impurities and allow Gods purification system to permeate and cleanse our soul.

"No Business Like Show Business" by The Broward Times
Andre and Tammy Sartin wear many hats. They are writer, producer, director and public relations team for Act 2 Productions, a South Florida based theater-company and budding small business. Their plays are authentic visions of everyday life, with characters that are textured and dynamic. The Sartin's are building a business.
With the recent success of Tyler Perry's "Madea" plays, Act 2 sees an opportunity to expand and establish itself as the premier theater company in the southeast. "This is a passion for me. I can work 12 hours a day and get to rehearsal and feel like I just woke up," said Andre Sartin. Andre is the creative side of the duo, writing all original material for the plays and directing the productions. Tammy prefers the behind the scenes side of the business and is responsible for the marketing, public relations and merchandise sales. The couple has honed their working relationship through 12 years of marriage and eight years of putting on plays.
Act 2 officially incorporated as a business in June of 2003. The Sartins decided to begin their theater company after seeing success with their plays on a local level."We were doing plays for our church and we saw how we were packing out the churches and we thought why don't we do this for real. I wanted to be able to do something different than I could in the churches. I wanted to do something different with the lights and dynamics of the play," Andre said. The next step was to hold citywide auditions and find a cast that could provide the authenticity that Act 2 felt necessary to sell its product. While Andre Sartin pursued a cast that he felt could communicate the emotions, humor and drama of his scripts, Tammy began to put together the marketing materials. In order to get off the ground Act 2 needed sponsors. "You have to find who your target audience is, and then you can go to a company and show them who you are reaching. No matter what the product is companies want to advertise. You're selling an opportunity for them to get noticed, to be seen by hundreds of people," Tammy said. The business side of running a production company is the least favorite part for movie-buff Andre.
Andre Sartin's love affair with the theater began as a young man watching his favorite movies. "I would watch movies and say I can create that. Watching actors like Sidney Poitier and Harry Belafonte inspired me. Sometimes I would get called to be an extra in a film and I started watching the director and saying I want that job," Sartin said. As a director and writer Sartin wants to know why. "You have to look at the whys of the storyline. You have to research into the why behind people's behaviors. You need the details because people want authenticity. The audience has to believe," Sartin said. Sartin's ability to create authentic characters in entertaining situations is one of the key ingredients for the success of ACT2 as a business. "This business is not like any other business. It's not like a supply and demand business. We have to create the demand. And that comes with good marketing of a good product," Tammy Sartin said.
While Andre prefers to focus on the creative side, Tammy is the woman building the image of the company and it's products. "Just like he knows how he wants the actual play to look, I know exactly how I want the marketing materials to look. I know the image that we want each play and the company to give off," Tammy said. By their own admission, neither member of the Sartin team is a marketing guru and learning the delicate art of marketing was a trial and error experience. "You have to time it right. You can't start marketing to early or to late. You have to have a schedule. We go into the barbershops and beauty salons, because that's our target audience. The plays are for everybody, but we like to focus our marketing in the communities where the venue is," Tammy said.Act 2 used to produce about three plays a year, but is now producing one play and running it for a longer time.
One of their most recent productions, Double Lives, had been running since June. Sartin said focusing on one play allows for the director and cast to master the work. Each performance of an Act 2 production is a little different. The music may be a little different or updated for the times and the actors may ad lib, but the message is always the same. There is a message in each play, for Double Lives the Sartins pose the question 'are you living a double life?' "We always want to promote Christ, but we also want you to be entertained. We don't try to beat you over the head with it, but if the play is done right the audience will walk away and be challenged," Andre said.Tammy said the plays are an event, a "night of jazz and theater."
Music is a big part of each production. Funk, jazz, gospel and R&B are all used in Act 2 productions. Now the next step is to take the show on the road and grow the company, and for that they need sponsors and a demand. "We want to be the No. 1 production company in the southeast. There is an opportunity for us to take this area so come out with a date or with friends for an evening of..." Tammy said.
